About Bhattadev University

Bhattadev University is one of the three new universities that were established in 2019 by the Government of Assam by upgrading three well-established colleges in Assam. Bajali College, a NAAC ‘A’ Grade college founded on 16 August 1955 at Pathsala town in the present-day Bajali district of Assam, formally started functioning as Bhattadev University with effect from 24 June 2019, the date on which Prof. Birinchi Kumar Das assumed his office as the first Vice- Chancellor of the University. It is the realization of a long-cherished dream of the people of greater Bajali to have a university in Bajali. Aptly enough, the new university has been named after an illustrious son of Assam and a son of the soil from the greater Bajali region, Vaikunthanaath Bhagavat Bhattacharya who is acknowledged as the father of Assamese prose. Bhattadev’s legendary rendition in religious congregations and command over the Sanskrit Shrimadbhagavatam (translated by him into Assamese prose as Katha Bhagavat), the essential shastra forming the fulcrum of Assamese Vaishnava Dharma revolving around Krishna Charitra, earned him the title of Bhagavat Bhattacharya, shortened to Bhattadev by his followers.
